「be afraid of」の意味と使い方
be afraid of
熟語〜を恐れている
「be afraid of」は、何かを恐れる、何かを心配しているという意味で使われます。「of」の後には、恐れる対象や心配の原因を置きます。
I’m afraid of failure.
失敗を恐れている。
「be afraid of」の例文
物や動物、状況などを恐れる場合
I’m afraid of spiders.
私はクモが怖い。
She is afraid of heights.
彼女は高所恐怖症だ。
They are afraid of the dark.
彼らは暗闇が怖い。
何か悪いことや困難が起こることを心配する場合
I’m afraid of failing the test.
テストに落ちることを心配している。
She is afraid of getting sick.
彼女は病気になることを心配している。
We are afraid of missing the train.
電車に乗り遅れることを心配している。
「afraid」と「scared」の違い
「afraid」と「scared」はどちらも「恐れている」という意味で使われますが、ニュアンスが異なります。
- afraid：内的要因（自分の内側にあるものを怖がる）
- scared：外的要因（自分の外側にあるものを怖がる）
例文を見てみましょう。
I am afraid that I might be late.
遅れるかもしれないのが心配だ。
この例文は内的要因として「遅れるかもしれない」と感じているため、「afraid」を使います。
I am scared of that big dog.
あの大きな犬が怖い。
この例文は外的要因として「あの大きな犬」を怖いと感じているため、「scared」を使います。
注意：「I’m afraid that〜」は意味が異なる！
「I’m afraid that〜」という表現もありますが、これは「〜を恐れている」という意味ではなく、以下の意味で使われます。
①残念ながら〜
I’m afraid that I can’t come to the party.
残念ながらパーティーには来られません。
I’m afraid that the event has been cancelled.
残念ながら、イベントはキャンセルされました。
I’m afraid that you didn’t pass the test.
残念ながら、テストに合格しなかったようです。
I’m afraid that we can’t refund your ticket.
残念ながら、チケットの払い戻しはできません。
②あいにく〜
I’m afraid that we are out of stock.
あいにく、在庫がありません。
I’m afraid that it’s going to be rainy tomorrow.
あいにく、明日は雨が降りそうです。
I’m afraid that we are fully booked tonight.
あいにく、今夜はすでに満室です。
③恐れ入りますが〜
I’m afraid that you’re in the wrong seat.
恐れ入りますが、違う席に座っています。
I’m afraid that we’re closing soon.
恐れ入りますが、もうすぐ閉店時間です。
I’m afraid that the last order was 10 minutes ago.
恐れ入りますが、ラストオーダーは10分前でした。
④気の毒ですが〜
I’m afraid that the show has already started.
（気の毒ですが）ショーはもう始まっています。
I’m afraid that your application was not successful.
（気の毒ですが）申し込みは受理されませんでした。
I’m afraid that the workshop is full.
（気の毒ですが）ワークショップは満員です。
⑤言いにくいのですが〜
I’m afraid that I lost the book you lent me.
言いにくいのですが、貸してくれた本をなくしました。
I’m afraid that I can’t make it to your party.
言いにくいのですが、パーティーに参加できません。
I’m afraid that I broke the vase.
言いにくいのですが、花瓶を壊してしまいました。
⑥申し訳ないが〜
I’m afraid that we can’t extend the deadline.
申し訳ないが、締め切りを延ばせません。
I’m afraid that your card has been declined.
申し訳ないが、カードが承認されませんでした。
I’m afraid that the meeting has been rescheduled.
申し訳ないが、ミーティングはリスケされました。
補足：「be afraid to do」という形でも使える！
「be afraid to do」は、「〜することを恐れている」という意味です。「be afraid of」は後に名詞が続きますが、「be afraid to do」は一般動詞を置くことができます。
I’m afraid to ask her out.
彼女にデートに誘うのが怖いです。
He is afraid to speak in front of a large audience.
彼は多くの観衆の前で話すのを恐れています。
She’s afraid to touch the snake.
彼女はその蛇に触るのが怖がっている。
