「apply to」と「apply for」の意味の違い

「apply to」と「apply for」を比較すると、持つ意味の数が違います。「apply to」の方が多くの意味を持ちます。
注意点としては、「apply to」と「apply for」はどちらも「〜に申し込む」という意味があり、使い分けする際に混乱する方が多いです。
最初はそれぞれを使い分けるのは難しいですが、以下をイメージできれば使い分けは簡単です。
- apply to ＋応募先（対象に向かうイメージ）
- apply for ＋手に入れたいもの（対象を求めるイメージ）

「apply to ＋応募先」は、対象に向かうイメージです。応募書類が応募先に向かう感じ。
そのため、「apply to」は学校や会社などのプログラムやコースに対して使われます。
I applied to Sophia University.
上智大学に応募しました。
apply for ＋手に入れたいも（対象を求めるイメージ）
「apply for ＋手に入れたいもの」は、対象を求めるイメージです。
そのため、特定の仕事や資格、参加などに対して使われます。
He decided to apply for a scholarship.
彼は奨学金を申請することに決めました。
「apply to」の例文
①〜に適用する
ルールや条件が適用する際に「apply to A（Aに適用する）」「apply A to B（AをBに適用する）」という形で使われます。
